Renewing an Australian passport involves a detailed process that requires specific documentation and adherence to guidelines. To begin, applicants must possess an adult Australian passport that was valid for at least two years at the time of issuance, issued after July 1, 2000, and in the applicant's current name, date of birth, and sex. For those who have a child passport, the criteria differ slightly, including the requirement that the child passport was issued after July 1, 2005, and the applicant was at least 16 years old at that time. It's important to note that if the original passport is lost or stolen, the renewal process cannot be utilized, and a different application must be completed. Appointments are necessary for certain applicants wishing to lodge their forms at a Passport Office in Australia, and inquiries can be directed to the Australian Passport Information Service. The application process also includes specific requirements for photographs, payment methods, and submission locations, whether in Australia or overseas. Additionally, the Passport Office aims to issue renewed passports within ten working days, although priority processing is available for an additional fee. Understanding these requirements will help streamline the renewal process and ensure a smoother experience for all applicants.

Dos and Don'ts

When filling out the Australian Passport Renewal form, consider the following dos and don’ts to ensure a smooth application process.

  • Do ensure your passport was valid for at least 2 years when issued.
  • Do confirm that your passport was issued after 1/7/2000.
  • Do use your current name, date of birth, and sex as they appear on your passport.
  • Do make an appointment if required, especially when lodging your application at a Passport Office.
  • Do keep your passport safe to protect your identity.
  • Don’t forget to provide the passport that matches the number on page 2 of the form.
  • Don’t apply without the required two identical colour photographs.
  • Don’t submit your application if your passport is lost or stolen without completing the appropriate form first.
  • Don’t use a photograph that does not meet the specified requirements.

Following these guidelines will help facilitate a successful passport renewal process.
